Bhajan Library

Our family songbook, one bhajan at a time

A bhajan is a small act of togetherness. Two lines, four voices, a bell — and suddenly a room becomes a temple. Every song here is one we sing at AEK gatherings.

Vitthala Bhajans

The Warkari tradition sung across Maharashtra and Konkan — Panduranga waiting on the brick at Pandharpur, hands on hips, patient with all of us.

Marathi

Vitthala Vitthala Jai Hari Vitthala

Meaning. A joyful call-and-response naming Vitthal, his consort Rakhumai, and the saint-poets Gyaneshwar and Tukaram who carried the tradition to every home.

Marathi

Yeyi Yo Vitthala

Meaning. A pleading song — 'Come, Vitthala, my mother-friend, come.' Sung slowly by our aajis, one hand on the harmonium, one on the grandchild.

Krishna Bhajans

Butter-thief, cowherd, chariot-driver, friend. Krishna is the bhajan our children learn first because his stories are impossible not to smile through.

Sanskrit

Achyutam Keshavam Krishna Damodaram

Meaning. Naming the many names of the Lord — Achyuta the imperishable, Keshava the beautifully-haired, Damodara the one bound by a mother's love. The couplet reminds us: the Lord comes when we call the way Meera called.

Hindi

Govinda Bolo Hari Gopal Bolo

Meaning. A simple, buoyant chant — 'Say Govinda, say Gopal.' Perfect for teaching little ones their first bhajan on a Sunday morning.

Devi Bhajans

The Mother in every form — Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ambabai, Mahalakshmi of Kolhapur. During Navaratri the hall becomes hers, nine nights running.

Hindi

Ambe Tu Hai Jagdambe Kali

Meaning. A Navaratri favourite — praising the Mother as Jagadambe (mother of the universe), Kali the fierce, and Bhavani the giver of prosperity and wisdom.

Sanskrit

Ya Devi Sarva Bhuteshu

Meaning. 'To the Devi who dwells in every being as strength — I bow, I bow, I bow.' A shloka from the Devi Mahatmyam, often chanted before Navaratri aarti.

Ganapati Bhajans

The first bhajan of every AEK gathering. Bappa is invoked before we do anything — before food, before music, before speeches. Especially before speeches.

Marathi

Sukhkarta Dukhharta

Meaning. The beloved Ganesh aarti composed by Sant Ramdas — 'Bringer of joy, remover of sorrow, banisher of obstacles.' The one bhajan every Konkani family knows by heart.

Sanskrit

Vakratunda Mahakaya

Meaning. 'O curved-trunk one, mighty-bodied, radiant as ten million suns — grant that all my undertakings be free of obstacles, always.' The shloka we say before anything begins.

Shiva Bhajans

The stillness at the centre — Bholenath, Neelkanth, Shankar. On Shivaratri our elders sit through the night with a diya and a rudraksha and don't need much else.

Sanskrit

Om Namah Shivaya

Meaning. The five-syllable mantra — Na, Ma, Shi, Va, Ya — for the five elements. Sung as a slow, deep repetition; the room breathes with it.

Hindi

Bholenath Se Nirala

Meaning. 'Who is more wondrous than my Bholenath — with the Ganga in his matted hair and the moon on his brow?' A tender, personal bhajan for Shivaratri jaagran.
